In an effort to draw attention away from the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show, Apple made an announcement pertaining to its iOS App Store: the mark of 40 billion downloads, omitting redownloads and updates, has been made. According to statement released by Apple, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services said, “It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community.
Developers have made over $7 billion on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.” Better still, thanks to a substantial increase in device sales in December, almost 2 billion downloads were registered last month alone. As the figures stand, almost 20 billion downloads took place in 2012, indicating not only how popular these apps are but also how the store is measuring up to Google Play’s performance.
Apple also revealed through the statement that it has 775000 apps at the iOS Store while also having about 500000 active account and out of which 300000 apps are native iPad apps. Apart from this, they offer apps in 23 categories in a variety of fields to iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users in almost 155 countries.
As for Google’s Play Store, they were on par with Apple in October 2012 as they also had about 700000 apps at that time. According to experts, that number will rise to about a million apps by the June 2013. However, one thing is for sure: the way Apple provides its developers with tools and necessary resources to create great apps is evident from the numbers.
