According to data released by IDC, Apple maintained its lead in overall tablet market share during the second quarter of 2016. This follows the numbers released from the Apple earning call where they confirmed sales of 10 million ipads, just a million under the same period last year. Despite this drop, Apple’s market share has increased slightly. The entire tablet market tracked by IDC decline 12.3% year over year from 44.1 million units shipped to 38.7 million.
Apple’s share of the market was 25% with Android dominating at 65%:
“Apple’s launch of its second detachable helped lessen its year-over-year decline to 9%, but more importantly it helped raise Apple’s average selling price (ASP) and revenue. Price reductions on previous generation iPads and the latest Pro iterations are expected to have the same effect for the remainder of 2016 as the consumer and enterprise audiences evaluate their needs… An overwhelming majority of tablets shipped this past quarter were Android-based systems (65%) followed by iOS, which captured 26%, and Windows for the remaining share.”
The Android tablet leaders were Samsung and Lenovo. These sales come despite that fact that unlike iOS, Android does not have many tablet optimized apps. Both Google and the manufacturers have been trying to fix this but developers have not been interested due to the lack of sales. Now that Android tablet sales are showing decent numbers, maybe this time around users will start to see most of the major iPad apps ported to Android.
